I bought a 2017 Infiniti Q50 3.0 Premium (private seller)
After 3 months of ownership, what i now belive to be my timing chain broke/snapped. I took it to a mechanic and the mechanic basically scammed me. So now I'm looking around for help.

I read the engine codes and I got 1 code.
P0024

I have this knocking sound when I turn on the car; it comes and goes, but usually only when it's higher than 1,000 RPM. and this knocking sound is NOT quite at all. I was told to not run the car so i really haven't.
Does anybody have any say or anything they could recommend me to try? It's my first car, and I'm really not having the best time with it. But I love the car.
am i SOL?

How did your mechanic scam you? Did they take your money and do no work or did they mess up the car and left you no recourse?

The mechanic had my car for over 3 months, almost 4. with 0 work done to it, it was supposed to be just a diagnoses btw. not even the actual work on it. when i finally decided that 4 months was too long. i decided to go talk to him and ask him what was going on. he got in my head about how 2 employees quit on him and how he had gotten sick and all this random stuff. with me being an empathetic person i decided to let him have my car for another week. on the last day he called me and said i needed a new engine. that the timing chain had ruined my engine and my turbos and that i would need a new engine. which i didint fully believe or trust. since he had already lied to us previously before. that we caught. mind you this is a friends dad. so not just some random mechanic. i told him “ok, just give me some time to come up with that kind of money, that i’ll be there in a couple of days to pick up the car” and he said ok that he would have it ready to be picked up. I got to pick up the car. he asked to buy the car off me straight up, which didint sound right to me, i didn’t want to give it up just yet so i told him that maybe later but i wasn’t too interested in selling the car. he then offered an extra grand for it. i again declined. eventually he started arguing with me about i should just sell him the car because its messed up and how it’s a POS and i didint like the attitude he was giving me so i decided to just not sell it. he then proceeded to charge me 1,200 USD for a diagnoses that went from a couple weeks, to 4 months, with no call, no check up, nothing. ( i tired to check up on it multiple times but he just kept pushing it off saying that he would check it soon, and next week, and stuff like that) i also didint have the money so it didint bother me too much at the time that it was taking a bit. but thinking about it now, 4 months? i’m not a mechanic but i would be ok with a couple weeks to a month for a engine replacement. but it wasn’t a engine replacement. it was a diagnoses. and it wasn’t a couple weeks to a month. and it wasn’t a couple weeks to a month, it was 4 months.

That is a terrible experience I wouldn't wish on anyone. A friend's dad scamming you will leave you feeling all kinds of weird and hurt.

This calls for some serious planning on your end. How do you want to deal with your relationship to that man and his business?

You could seek formal options like a complaint with your state attorney general's office, an anonymous tip to the IRS about their scummy practices, a review with the BBB (mind you the BBB is a business themselves, but they are pretty nice about contacting a business about your issues and keeping negative reviews available for view), and google reviews among other things.

A typical used engine costs maybe $5K for the unit itself and another $3K for install labor and consumables. The total cost is well-worth considering a lawsuit for. A lot of the time, people will settle out of court to avoid judgement, so getting a lawyer friend to hear you out is a worthy option. A strongly worded letter could be all it takes on the lawyer's part. Be sure to have all text messages, emails, receipts, and any supporting documentation handy.

So the mechanic basically wants to steal)a very nice car from you for pennies on the dollar đź’µ ,,then put it back together and have a really nice car for yr or two then probably sell it for an enormous profit..Shame on that ************..

Glad you didn't sell the car. That guy was trying to take advantage of you. Especially since he was so quick to tack on another $1k to his offer. 4 months? I would've had words with that guy for sure. What a POS and you don't owe him $hit. Put as much distance between him and yourself as possible. Between the AC compressor and the alternator in your trunk I can see it's going to cost a lot of money to get this car back to order. Sorry for your crappy experience.

I wouldn’t pay him a dollar, call the police and/or tow your car away.
