Dumb decision (Exhaust)

So I had an axleback muffler delete and decided I wanted some more deeper tone and louder without rasp. This led me down the route to get aftermarket resonators, now my dumbass installed these magnaflow 10416s and it sounds the same. Other than a slightly better tone. Should I just sell the axle back and get a catback, or just buy downpipes since in want to get tuned in the future? Or replace the resonators with something different? Thanks in advance.

This is precisely why I advise not to nickel and dime your exhaust.

I’ve always stood on saving up and buying yourself a proper catback exhaust. Meal piecing parts from here and there is an expensive experiment on its own.

I’d buy the MBRP 3” cat-back exhaust for $1100 if I had to do it over again.

Worst situation would be if you keep cutting, welding, or installing different parts, you’ll end up spending right around what a cat-back would have been from the beginning.

I wish you the best of luck in finding the correct harmonics you’re looking for.

I started off with a Tanabe Medallion axle-back and ran it for about 6 years. It had a good tone, but it was on the quieter end. I would only really hear it if I was hard on the throttle.

I installed a set of resonated LDPs and the MBRP Sport Exhaust (the one without the mid resonators). Its loud (but not obnoxious) and has a drone. It gets a little tiresome on the highway for long drives and my ears sometimes ring after a 20 minute session on the track. This setup has received multiple compliments at the race track; however, I don't think my neighbors are too happy about my cold starts in the morning.

Just wanted to share my experience chasing after a good exhaust tone.

P.S. IIRC, full down pipes require tuning right away as the car will not run correctly without it.

Fast Intentions: Infiniti Q50 Exhaust
Sounds:

Racebox's exhaust: Racebox Valved 3" True Dual Cat-back Exhaust for 2016+ Infiniti Q50
Sounds:

These are the only two exhausts i would recommend to anyone for a daily driven Q50. Everything else is either VASTLY overpriced, will be restrictive once the engine is tuned (shitty 3" Y pipe merge or half ass clam shell X-pipe), or obnoxiously raspy with a ton of drone.

the MBRP exhaust without additional resonators is embarrassing as hell. i would not wish it upon my worst enemy. it sounds like a dying cow using a kazoo. its incredibly raspy. go to the last 30 seconds of this video to get a feel for what it will sounds like when not full throttle:

people generally tend to end up installing multiple resonators in that exhaust to tame it down. if you keep the OEM lowers, its not AS bad, but who in their right mind is keeping those straws? lastly, the MBRP exhaust IS NOT A TRUE 3" exhaust. it necks down to 2.5" at the downpipe, meaning you ANY 3" lower (or full) downpipe wont work...well. not such a huge deal on a stock to slightly modded Q50, but i have to ask: Why bother getting a 3" exhaust that isnt even really 3" at the single most important area of the exhaust?

Yeah I was going to go with the mbrp at first but the money was a problem. Now I wish I just saved up😪. I appreciate your insight and will definitely listen now. Are ldps worth it with my setup? Im definitely going to get them but im wondering should I get the downpipes first or the catback.

FI CBE with resonators and LDP with resonators FTW!

I've never heard your current setup so I can't answer that question. My guess based on what has been reported here about MBRP CBEs is it would be more without resonators and adding unresonated LDPs on top of that will accentuate the MBRP drone. Others here who have an MBRP CBE can better answer your question.

I don’t mind drone, if I did I wouldn’t have gotten an aftermarket exhaust to begin with honestly.

More drone more race car.

And I’m sure MBRP did their homework. I think the bad drone claims are more hyperbole than anything.

You can achieve little to no drone on a properly designed exhaust and still get a good sound.

Most drone occurs about 2000-2200 RPM, right where the Q50 runs while cruising. Taking long highway trips listening to that would drive me crazy, that's why I went with an FI CBE with a resonated X-pipe and resonated LDPs. Sounds great and no drone.

Hyperbole? We've had multiple members who installed MBRP CBEs come in here asking about what resonator manufacturer, what size, and where to scab in those resonators to mitigate the loud drone.

More drone more ricer, IMHO. As Blitz said, "you don't want your car sounding like a dying cow using a kazoo."

The OP said he didn't want a raspy drone anyway. Those YT MBRP videos demonstrate what the exhaust sounds like on the outside during a cold start and take off but you don't see any videos about how loud the drone sounds inside the cabin.

To each their own.

No body likes the Ark Exhaust? Maybe I don't appreciate the job it does because it’s all I’ve ever known.
